“Spooky scary skeletons send shivers down your spine,” *dun dun dun* (tell me you’re singing it in your head, now – or aloud – even better!). It’s no secret I love spooky season. As a lover of all things spook and as a fun mom (well, I try), I’m always looking for simple ways to sprinkle spook around the house. I’ll be sharing a series of ideas for anyone with littles (or you know, for yourself) that will bring ghoulish giggles to everyone involved! Jump right on in to simple ways to sprinkle spook, part 1 – we’re going to start with easy ways to take a bedroom door from drab to dapper this season – let’s do it!
Making spooky season special for my kids is important to me. Creating memories that will stick with them as they grow is something I hope to do (both big and small). Sometimes, my creative drive will get the best of me and I’ll start decking every nook and cranny to the brim with lights, garland, and spooky surprises. But that’s not always feasible or realistic (coming from a head-in-the-clouds gal over here).
Maybe going big isn’t always what’s important. I’ve started trying to create magic in smaller amounts without cutting out any of the actual magic – and it works!
A door is a great space to decorate. It’s a space that is well-used and seen throughout the day. I remember my mom decorating our doors around the holidays and feeling as though I was transported through a portal, even though it was a few simple strings of garland and lights.
It’s also easy to keep the budget small – most discount stores have everything you need to create a spooktacular doorway. I’ll also be sharing sources for a few themed ideas below! Each collection includes my staples for an outstanding door display: a wreath or centerpiece, several strings of garland, and lights! Over the years, I’ve learned to layer different types and styles of garland together to get a full look and feel. Choosing a theme always helps me organize my thoughts (and I need all the help I can get in that department)!
Spiders Galore!
Spiders are a favorite of mine (year-round) but are such a fun theme during spooky season! I envision using the webbing cloth, lit garland, and spidery lights as a drape around the door frame. Choose one of the many adorable spider wreaths as the perfect centerpiece! See this spidery collection, here!
Bewitching witches!
Spooky season would be an absolute bore without witches, am I right? Witches are a seasonal classic and one of my personal favorite themes (I’ve always felt a little witchy, you know?)! Pair a couple strings of leafy garland with this hauntingly beautiful string of black cats and witches riding on broomsticks. The vintage-look cardstock garland is top on my list to grab this season for that perfect time-worn touch. Witchy lights and pumpkins donning witch hats are a couple of my favorite things, too, and are sure to add just the right touch of magic. Take a closer look a this bewitching collection, here!
A little batty!
Bats are the best – in real life and as a spooky season staple. Imagine walking through a threshold brimming with black bats enveloped by a soft, purple glow. The BOO string garland paired with the orange and black banners is superbly spooky in the best way. Grab one of the batty wreaths below or create your own by using a standard fall wreath and stick-on bats of various sizes! Grab these batty pieces here!
Ghostly fun!
Who ya gonna call?? NO ONE! Because we love ghosts! Can we really talk spooky season without featuring fantastic phantoms? I wouldn’t think of it ghouls! Ghosts, banshees, and the like are so much fun to use as a central theme. I found so many cool strings of ghostly garland, lights, and wreaths that I honestly had a hard time choosing which pieces to feature. The black maple leaf lit garland as a base mixed with a string of floating ghosts and lights sets a spooky mood that will leave everyone smiling (or heading for the hills…which could be handy if you’re an introvert throwing a boo-bash, ya know?). See all of these lovely ghoulies, here!
Sprinkle your own spook!
Now, it’s your turn! Take these ideas, be inspired, and create something cool for you, your kids, grandkids, or someone else you love that would appreciate a smile this season. Then, send me your designs! I’ll share them on Instagram to inspire other ghoul friends. Get decorating and hold on tight for more ways to sprinkle spook, coming soon! Peace, love, and light (after coffee) my spooky friends!
