Have I told you lately how much I don’t like summer? It’s not that I despise the season as much as I loathe the butt sweat, ya know what’ I’m sayin’ (don’t act like you *don’t* know what I’m saying – everyone deals with butt sweat). Despite my general dislike of the summer heat, I do enjoy the growth and beauty that blooms this time of the year. Every season has positives and negatives (except fall – the only thing wrong with fall is that it doesn’t last year round) and I see summer as a time to appreciate growth and to try new things. In that spirit, I want to share my five simple steps to a summery bedroom refresh that put me a little outside of my color-comfort zone!

Five Simple Steps to a Summery Bedroom Refresh
Summery Bedroom Refresh Step 1: Choose a Color
I am so predictable when it comes to color. My oldest son alway bemoans the fact that “everything is white” and shakes his head when I go to repaint another piece of furniture, you guessed it, white. I *do* prefer sticking with neutrals largely because I’m able to add in accents of nearly any color that will work well. When it comes to refreshing a space, I think it’s important to pick a foundation color — something that you’ll work into a few pieces (pillows, art, bedding, etc.) — that will give your space a sense of continuity.
I decided to go with a French blue as my foundation color for this refresh. To be brutally honest, blue is one of my least favorite colors — at least I’ve never been overly confident using blue in any space — so this was definitely a step outside of my comfort zone. BUT I have to say I’m so glad I made this choice! This blue leans a bit gray — making it easy to tie in with other neutral shades in our bedroom.
Step 2: Bedding as a Focal Point
Whenever I go to refresh the bedroom, I almost always start with the bedding because this is what grounds the space and becomes the main focal point of the space. Adding in vintage artwork and printed pillows was in the plan, so I decided to choose a solid colored bedding so that the room didn’t become overly busy.
I found this oversized linen duvet cover and bed skirt from the LinenShed. The reviews were mixed (so I was a little nervous) on the amount of time it took for order processing/shipping as well as customer service communication. I only had great experiences with this order and didn’t have any of these issues and plan to use them again in the future!
Step 3: Swap Art
I love changing up the artwork in our room. You don’t really realize how an entire room can transform from adding one new piece of art. Don’t think it needs to be *new* either. I’m constantly moving prints from different areas of the house – making it feel like I’ve completely redone an area when all I’ve done is a little space swap!
For this refresh, I changed out one of my true vintage floral prints in a simple frame to a vintage reproduction floral in an ornate gold frame. The landscape, floral, and portrait I selected for this space blended well with my French blue — with varying tones of gray and hints of blue tying it all together. I used this antiquing wax to add age and a timeworn look to these frames.
Step 4: Swap Florals
Another of my five simple steps to a summery bedroom refresh is a quick swap of florals and/or greenery. This doesn’t have to be a major change, either. During the summer, I always add more potted pathos. They are my favorite houseplant (mostly because they are hardy and I am known for killing houseplants….).
Antique jugs are one of my favorite things and this dark beauty is a stunner! The long stems I used for the spring stayed put and I swapped out springy pinks/mauves for a dusty blue. Just a couple picks made all the difference in tying in my florals to my foundation color!
Step 5: Keep It Simple
This is my favorite and most important step. Keep. It. Simple. It’s tempting to want to overhaul an entire space (or even feel pressured to keep up with the latest trends) when you’re wanting a seasonal change. But it doesn’t need to be complicated OR expensive.
By following these five simple steps, you’ll be able to refresh your bedroom space with ease. Don’t go to extremes to make your bedroom feel like new. Sometimes, the smallest changes create the best energy — and that’s what a refresh should be all about — renewing your peace and energizing your soul (as long as you’re not killing your houseplants). Enjoy your summer and happy refreshing! Until next time, peace, love, & light.
