Always looking for ways to keep our many hands busy (albeit messy – but it’s a small price to pay), I wanted to ring in Spring with a small gardening project. While I still haven’t tried my own small garden starter (maybe by June?), I wanted each of the kids to have the chance to plant their own seeds, care for them, and (hopefully) watch them grow! I’ll be sharing the kits we used as well as a collection of my favorite small gardens for little hands!
This idea came about as I was planning what we could add to their Easter baskets this year. We usually try to mix the fun with something that sparks creativity. I came across these themed mini garden kits at a local hobby store and thought they would make the perfect basket stuffer!
All Inclusive Garden Fun!
Each kit comes with everything you need to build, plant, and grow a mini garden – which is a plus. I generally prefer all-in-one kits for the kiddos because the less I have to gather to put together, the better (mostly because I lose track of all the things as I have a tendency to squirrel things away in the “perfect” place – turns out it’s not so perfect).
The kits come with soil/sand and instructions for planting. Our 10 year old easily navigated the instructions but the other kiddos needed some guidance (I mean, when there is colorful sand, stickers, AND unicorn figurines you’re liable to become distracted). The themed kits called for regular tap water – but specialized plants like the Venus Fly Trap take distilled water or collected rain water.
The two older kids are excited about growing Venus Fly Traps that “EAT REAL MEAT MOM!” The only downside is that these guys take much longer to sprout – so, a lesson in patience is needed. The chia seeds sprout almost immediately – maybe three days – and I can tell our Venus Fly growers are chomping at the bit for any sign of growth!
Want to start your own mini garden? Here are a few of my top picks!
There are so many fun mini garden kits out there and I had a good time gathering a variety for your enjoyment! They really make great gifts or work well for additional activities for any time of the year (these would be the perfect winter time pick me up for anyone who feels those cold weather blues).
You can browse all of these unique kits here – some of them have the option to be lit at night – and honestly, you’re never too old to have fun getting your hands a little dirty (like I’m debating getting that fairy house garden up there – so fun!)! Have you planted anything yet this season? Let me know! Until next time, peace, love, & light (after coffee).
