It’s no secret that we are smack dab in the middle of my favorite time of the year (you know I’m wearing jingle bells every way it’s possible to wear them, right??). Autumn brings in a sense of warmth and change that only comes once a year – followed by the quiet chill of the wintry air (though, we did have a 70 degree day last week, UGH) – and it’s that sense of quiet change that sets my soul on fire. While the halls are decked and the nooks and crannies are bursting at the seams with holiday pizzazz, there are elements of the season that I always try to stretch into the rest of the year. Take a peek at a few of my own holiday looks to inspire all year round and keep those comfy vibes going strong!
The Most Wonderful Time of the Year
This time of the year gives me an overwhelming sense of fulfillment and gratitude – kind of like I’m enveloped in an old, comfy quilt lovingly stitched by my grandma years ago – something treasured and kept throughout every season of life (I don’t think my grandmas quilted (did they, mom?)…this is all for the sake of imagery). Anyway, that’s the way that I want our home to feel – warm and comfortable in every season of life.
The way a home feels says a lot about the energy – vibe – spirit – whatever – of the space and the people who live in it. Homes can feel heavy and burdened, light and free, weary and drained, alluring and comfortable, warm and charming, cold and empty – they are a lot like people, really. It’s like they absorb the energies around them and it seeps through the walls into the soul of the home.
Maybe that sounds odd (I mean, it’s not the first odd thing I’ve ever said, let’s be honest) but we are wired to feel something about the spaces around us. For those of us fortunate to have a home to call our own, there’s an innate desire to create that sense of “home” that’s so often crooned about in the Christmas tunes this time of the year. I mean, how often have you hummed “There’s No Place Like Home for the Holidays” in the last several weeks?
Holiday Looks to Inspire Year Round – Elements of “Home”
So, what are the elements that create the sense of holiday “home” that we all seek? Let me start by saying that I don’t know. There’s no magic formula and Google might try to tell you but it’s one of those things that you really need to figure out on your own. Super helpful, am I right? One of the things I’ve discovered over the years is that your sense of home will differ from mine.
I think that’s what I love about creating “home” so much. It’s like a canvas that’s ready and waiting for me to add all the pieces. Sometimes, the pieces are full of texture and warmth. Other times, they are a combination of natural elements and cool neutrals. But the overall mood of the space is one that speaks my intention – and I think that’s the most important piece of the puzzle.
Choose Your Intention
The intention behind your sense of home – how it looks and feels – is a choice that you get to make. What’s your intention? Mine is pretty simple. Home is a space where life can settle. In a world that is in constant motion amidst a culture that values busy-ness, our home is a haven for respite. For me, that often includes pillows (lots and lots and lots….and lots of pillows), throws, contrasting colors and textures, and places that encourage togetherness. I treasure those moments of togetherness – wrestling on the couch with the kids, fort building with throw blankets, pillow fights (my real reason for my pillow obsession – more ammo), and games spread out over the coffee table.
Now, I promised to share holiday looks to inspire all year round – and I hope that these views of our home fill your soul with feelings of warmth and inspiration. When I chat about a holiday home year round, I truly mean that your home is a place meant for those feelings of warmth, love, good will, and comfort throughout the year.
Those feelings come less from the stuff and more from the souls of the people and pets we cherish. As we welcome another holiday season, I hope you’re able to hold on to those moments, reflect on them, and carry them into the new year. I hope you feel my wishes for peace and health, my friend. Until next time, peace, love, & light (after coffee).
