You’re singing the song, aren’t you? If you’re not, you’re at least bobbing your head to the beat, right?
” I was working in the lab, late one night
When my eyes beheld an eerie sight
For my monster from his slab, began to rise
And suddenly to my surprise
He did the monster mash
(The monster mash) It was a graveyard smash
(He did the mash) It caught on in a flash
(He did the mash) He did the monster mash!”
If you weren’t singing and dancing before, you surely are, now (you’re welcome, by the way, for that marvelous ear worm)! There’s something about spooky season that puts me in the mood for a party! I’m not a big “partier” – like, you’ll most often find me home, content with my cats. But, on occasion, I do enjoy creating a little spooky magic! Hop on your broomstick and fly along with me as I share what you need to create a monster mash in four easy steps!

Create a Monster Mash Step One: Decor
Obviously, it’s easy for me to start with decor – it’s what I do! When I plan any event, I start by theming – thinking about the look and feel of the space is a great way to kickstart party organization. There are so many options that it can seem overwhelming! So, keep it simple. Spooky seasons makes it pretty easy to theme – ghastly ghosts, haunted hallows, silly spooks, be-witching witches – all of these are wonderfully spooky possibilities! Of course, you can mix and match. But starting with a well-defined theme can help you organize and not feel so scatter-brained. Here are a few of my favorite party decor finds this year! You can shop all the items below, here!
Create A Monster Mash Step Two: Games!
Whether you’re planning to entertain wee little goblins or old crotchety witches, you’ll be boo-ed if you don’t come prepared with a handful of spookified games for your guests! This doesn’t have to be complicated. Like everything, keep it simple! Take a normal game and put a Halloween spin on it. One of my favorites that works for all ages is Halloween Charades!
For parties with kids, traditional games with a spooky-twist are always a fun idea! This set comes with a variety of fun games like the sack race, an egg race, an a three legged race!
Create A Monster Mash Step Three: Activities!
What’s a party without organized activities, eh?? These don’t have to be overly cheesy – there are ways to add a handful of fun activities for your guests! For Halloween, one of the easiest activities to add to your list (that takes zero time to prep) is a costume contest! You can create your own categories or use template online for a voting system. I found these great ribbons and statues for prizes, too!
I also love a good craft when it comes to kid-centered events. For a spook-fest contest that is sure to be a roar, try grabbing a few haunted house cookie sets and rate them for creativity, spook, messiness, etc.! I love these sets that come pre-cut and ready for fun!
Create A Monster Mash Step Four: Food!
Yeah, we can’t talk parties without talking party food (like, who *does* that?!)! If you’re like me, you want to make your food fun but you don’t necessarily want to take a ton of time prepping and planning. Sure, there are SO many cute ideas on Pinterest for Halloween party snacks and food. I have several recipe books that I love that are filled to the cauldron brim with great ideas, too! This Unofficial Hocus Pocus Cookbook and Taste of Home Halloween Cookbook are two of my favorites. For something simple, just take common food and give it spooky names…like Poltergeist Pizza, Jello Brains, Mummy Dogs, Witches Brew (punch), Slurpy Snakes (spaghetti) – the possibilities are endless!
Well, my witches and warlocks – it’s been magical sharing a few of my tips for organizing a spooktacular event! Are you planning to gather any ghouls this season? If you do, I hope you have a truly terrible time, monsters! Until next time, peace, love, & light (after coffee)!
