I wrote this at 2 AM with a fever of 104 last month (pneumonia is a beast). It's one of the many pieces I've written with no intention of sharing publicly. •• Caught the light looking pretty this morning before making the bed. I was in a bit of a mood and this view, the safety of this space gave me peace. Because every day I feel an ache, a heaviness that won't leave me. Knowledge that the world is being held captive by folks that don't give a damn and I want to scream. So I scream...in splatters of paint, in photographs of rocks and earth, in words scrawled on lined pages, in music thrumming in my ears... Then I breathe and begin again. ••

Derek and I saw Disturbed last night - these are the nights I lose myself for a while — just to let the thrum of the bass reverberate through my bones, forget about the world.

But I couldn’t do it & I’m Disturbed, unable to shrug off the fear and concern of my family and friends in Iowa who have been left with leadership filled with hate.

Can you imagine? Can you imagine being filled with so much hate that you devote your energy into erasing, degrading, dehumanizing — putting it into law? …and then celebrating it?

And it’s not only Iowa - it’s happening everywhere. The federal government is removing Trans service members from the military. The message? You’re not human enough to protect and serve our country.

There are bills in committee that would criminalize bringing youth to drag shows. So, I assume it will be also be a crime to enjoy Mrs. Doubtfire, Tootsie, Hairspray, Rocky Horror, White Chicks, The Nutty Professor, Madea, Kinky Boots — and SO many more? Drag and books are a danger to kids? ....Until a drag queen barrels into a school and beats a child to death with To Kill A Mocking Bird, shut the fuck up.

There are representatives from several states introducing legislature asking the Supreme Court to overturn Obergefell v. Hodges, the decision that ruled marriage is a fundamental right for all.

If you do not believe that's a possibility, remember Roe v. Wade. Women are dying in Texas -- unable to recieve necessary medical care.

What is next? Who is next?

But there is something that I do know — if there is a God, She has nothing to do with this. Jesus? Don’t utter His name in your prayers if you believe this is a “win” in your cruel heart. Yes. This is cruelty on display.

Empathy. It’s much more valid, so much more significant, meaningful, than anything else in the universe. The Iowa Legislature is absent of it — as are so many others that fail to listen to cries of the people. This is not what the people want — and it will be recorded into history. Which side will you be on? How many will die as a result?
